History
Louis C. Sudler was a Chicago businessman and philanthropist who was also an avid supporter of the arts. Before his death, Sudler endowed an annual prize in the arts at fourteen major universities across the United States, including Rice University. The Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts was established at Rice in 1983. This prestigious prize is awarded annually to a graduating senior at Rice who has demonstrated excellence and proficiency in one of the following areas: music, theater, painting, sculpture, design, architecture, or film.
Selection
The criteria for selection will seek out a truly outstanding student in one of the previously mentioned arts areas who, in the opinion of the selection committee, demonstrates exceptional artistic excellence, as well as promise of future achievement.
Award
The winner of the Sudler Prize in the Arts will receive a monetary prize of $1000 and will be recognized in the commencement program.
